Do Tradies Really Need a Website in 2026?

It's a fair question. Plenty of tradies have run busy, successful businesses for years without a website. Word of mouth, a Facebook page and a ute with your number on the side can go a long way.

So do you actually need a website? The short answer is that if you're happy with the work you get and don't want more of it, you might not. But if you want to grow, choose your jobs, or rely less on whoever your mates are talking to this month, a website does a lot of things nothing else can.

01Even referrals check you out online

Here's something a lot of tradies don't realise. Even when someone gets your name from a friend, they'll usually look you up before they call. They want to see your work, check you're legit and get a feel for whether you're the right fit.

If all they find is a Facebook page that hasn't been updated since 2022, or nothing at all, some of them will quietly ring someone else. You'll never know you lost the job.

02Facebook isn't a website

A Facebook page is useful, but it's not a replacement for a website. You don't own it, you can't control how it looks, and Facebook can change the rules or lock your account whenever it likes. It also doesn't rank well on Google for searches like "builder Hamilton" or "electrician near me".

It's the same story with listing sites like Builderscrack or NoCowboys. They're helpful, but your profile sits next to your competitors, and you're building their brand rather than yours.

03What a website does that nothing else can

A decent website works for you around the clock. It's where:

  • People searching Google for your trade can find you, not just people who already know your name
  • You can show off your best work properly, organised the way you want
  • Your ads can send people to a page that's built to turn them into enquiries
  • You look like an established, professional business, which helps you charge what you're worth
  • People can get in touch at 10pm without needing to call

That last one matters more than you'd think. A lot of homeowners do their research in the evening after the kids are in bed. If the only way to reach you is calling during the day, you're missing those people.

04What a good tradie website needs

You don't need anything fancy. A great trade website is usually pretty simple:

  • A clear homepage that says what you do and where, in the first few seconds
  • A separate page for each main service you want more of
  • Plenty of real photos of your work, not stock images
  • Reviews and testimonials from real customers
  • Your phone number big and clickable on every page, especially on mobile
  • A short, simple contact form
  • Fast loading, because people on their phones won't wait

The separate service pages are a big one for SEO. Google can't rank you for "deck builder Tauranga" if your website never mentions decks. We go into that more in our guide to local SEO for tradies.

05Common mistakes we see

When we look at tradie websites, the same issues come up again and again:

  • The phone number is tiny, hidden in the footer, or not clickable on mobile
  • Every service is crammed onto one page
  • Stock photos of models in hard hats instead of real jobs
  • The site takes forever to load on a phone
  • The contact form is broken and nobody's noticed
  • It's built on a platform the owner can't update, so it's years out of date

That broken contact form one is more common than you'd believe. If you haven't tested yours lately, do it today.

06Do you need a big expensive site?

No. For most trade businesses, a lean, fast site with good service pages beats a big flashy one every time. What matters is that it's clear, quick, trustworthy and easy to get in touch through.

If you're running ads, you might also want dedicated landing pages for your main services. They're built for one job and tend to turn more of your ad clicks into enquiries.

07The verdict

If you want to grow, show up on Google, run ads that actually pay off, or just stop losing the people who look you up before calling, then yes. You need a website. It doesn't need to be complicated, but it does need to be good.
