How Much Do Google Ads Cost for Tradies in NZ?

Rocky O'Neill7 min read

It's the first thing almost every tradie asks us, usually before they've even said what trade they're in. How much do Google Ads cost? It's a fair question. You're not going to hand over your hard-earned money without knowing roughly what you're in for.

The annoying answer is that it depends. But it depends on a handful of things you can actually get your head around, and once you understand them you'll be able to work out a sensible Google Ads budget for your business in about ten minutes.

01You pay per click, not per month

Google Ads runs on a pay-per-click model. You don't pay for your ad to show up. You pay when someone clicks on it. How much each click costs is decided by a live auction every time someone searches.

So when you search "roofer Christchurch", every roofer advertising in Christchurch is bidding for that spot. The more businesses chasing the same search, the higher the price climbs. That's why the cost of Google Ads for a builder in central Auckland looks very different to the cost for a drainlayer in Southland.

You set a daily budget, and Google won't go meaningfully over it across the month. That means you're always in control of the total spend. What you can't control directly is the price of each click. You can only make each click more likely to turn into a job.

02What pushes the cost per click up or down

A few things decide how much you'll pay for each click:

  • How many other businesses are advertising for the same searches in your area
  • How valuable the job is (high-value work like new builds and roofing tends to attract more bidders)
  • How good your ad and website are, because Google rewards relevant ads with cheaper clicks
  • How tightly you've targeted your area and your keywords

That third point is the one most people miss. Google gives every ad a Quality Score. Better ads with better landing pages can pay less per click than competitors and still show above them. Throwing more money at a bad campaign is the expensive way to win.

03Stop thinking about cost per click

Here's where we'd gently push back on the original question. The cost per click doesn't really matter on its own. What matters is how much it costs you to get a real, booked job.

Let's walk through an example. These are made-up numbers just to show the maths, not a quote for your trade.

Say clicks cost you $8 each. Out of every 10 people who click, one calls or fills in your form. That's $80 per lead. If you win one in every three quotes, that's $240 to land a job. If the average job is worth $6,000 to you, spending $240 to get it is a great deal.

Now say a cheaper campaign gets you $3 clicks, but they're all from the wrong suburbs and people looking for DIY advice. Nobody calls. Your cost per job is infinite. Cheap clicks aren't a win if they don't turn into work.

04How to work out your starting budget

Here's a simple way to work out a Google Ads budget that makes sense for you:

  • Work out what an average job is worth to you in profit, not just revenue
  • Decide how many extra jobs a month you can actually handle
  • Ask yourself what you'd happily pay to land one of those jobs
  • Multiply that by the number of jobs you want, and that's your ceiling

Then start lower than the ceiling, prove the campaign is booking quotes, and scale up from there. There's no prize for going big on day one.

The other thing to keep in mind is that Google needs a bit of data to learn. A tiny budget spread across ten services and five towns won't get enough clicks on any of them to tell you anything. It's better to start focused on your most profitable service in your core area.

05Where most tradies waste their Google Ads budget

When we take over an account a tradie has been running themselves, the same leaks come up over and over:

  • Broad match keywords showing ads for loosely related searches nobody wanted
  • No negative keywords, so they're paying for "jobs", "salary", "DIY" and "how to" searches
  • Ads running all over the country when they only work in one region
  • Sending clicks to a homepage instead of a page about the specific service
  • No conversion tracking, so nobody knows which keywords bring in work

Fixing those alone can make a big difference to how far your budget goes. You can read more about how we set up campaigns on our Google Search Ads page.

06The bit nobody talks about: follow-up

You can have the most efficient Google Ads campaign in New Zealand and still waste half of it if nobody calls the leads back quickly. Someone searching for an electrician is usually ringing two or three at once. Whoever gets back to them first has a big head start.

That's why we pair our campaigns with a 3-minute lead response, handled by a real salesperson based here in NZ. It's the cheapest way to lower your cost per job, because you stop losing the leads you already paid for.

07So, what should you spend?

Enough to get meaningful data on your best service in your core area, and no more than you'd happily spend to win the number of jobs you want. Start there, track everything back to booked quotes, and let the results tell you when to spend more.

If you'd like a straight answer for your trade and region, get in touch. We'll tell you honestly whether Google Ads makes sense for you, and if it doesn't, we'll say that too.
