Local SEO for Tradies: How to Rank on Google Maps

Search "plumber near me" on your phone right now. Before any websites show up, you'll see a map with three businesses pinned on it. Google calls it the local pack. Most people just call it the map.

For tradies, that map is prime real estate. People searching for a local trade usually want someone nearby, quickly, and the map gives them a phone number, reviews and directions in one tap. If you're in those top three spots, you get a big share of the calls. If you're not, you're relying on people scrolling further than most of them bother to.

Here's how local SEO for tradies works, and the practical steps to climb up the map.

01The three things Google looks at

Google has been fairly open about how it ranks local businesses. It comes down to three things:

  • Relevance: how well your business matches what someone searched for
  • Distance: how close you are to the person searching, or the area they searched for
  • Prominence: how well known and trusted your business is, online and off

You can't do much about distance. If your yard is in Hornby, you'll naturally have an easier time showing up for searches in Hornby than in Rangiora. But relevance and prominence are completely in your hands, and that's where most tradies have a lot of room to improve.

02Start with your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is the listing that shows up on the map. It's free, and it's the single most important thing in local SEO. Most tradies set one up years ago, filled in the basics and never touched it again.

A fully optimised profile has the right primary category, every relevant secondary category, every service you offer listed out, your service areas set, proper opening hours, a description that clearly explains what you do and where, and lots of real photos of your work.

We've put together a full Google Business Profile checklist for tradies if you want to go through yours step by step.

03Reviews do a lot of the heavy lifting

Reviews matter for two reasons. They're one of the signals Google uses to decide who ranks, and they're one of the first things people read before choosing who to call.

It's not just the number of reviews either. Google and customers both pay attention to how recent they are, what they say, and whether you reply to them. A steady trickle of fresh reviews every month is far better than fifty from four years ago and nothing since.

The tradies with the most reviews almost always have one thing in common. They ask every single happy customer, every time, in a way that makes it easy. We've written a whole guide on how to get more Google reviews.

04Your website still matters

A lot of people think the map is all about the Google Business Profile, but your website plays a big part too. Google looks at your site to understand what you do and where you do it, and to judge how trustworthy your business is.

The things that help most:

  • A separate page for each main service, not one page listing everything
  • Clear mentions of the areas you work in, ideally with a page for each key town or region
  • Your business name, address and phone number on every page, matching your Google profile exactly
  • A site that loads quickly and works properly on a phone
  • Real photos of your work, with sensible file names and descriptions

If you don't have a website or yours is a bit tired, have a read of do tradies really need a website.

05Get your details consistent everywhere

Google cross-checks your business information across the web. Directories like Yellow, Finda, NoCowboys, Builderscrack and your trade association listings all count. If your business name, address and phone number are different across these sites, Google gets less confident about who you are.

Go through the main NZ directories and make sure your details are exactly the same everywhere. Same spelling, same phone number format, same address. It's boring work, but it helps.

Links from other websites to yours are a strong signal of prominence. For tradies, the best links tend to come from places you already have a real connection with:

  • Suppliers and brands you're an approved installer for
  • Trade associations and industry bodies you belong to
  • Local sports clubs, schools or events you sponsor
  • Local news stories about projects you've worked on

You don't need hundreds. A handful of genuine local links from trusted sites makes a real difference. Our link building page goes into more detail on how we approach it.

07Keep your profile active

Google likes businesses that look active. Posting updates to your Google Business Profile, adding new photos of recent jobs, answering questions and replying to reviews all show that you're open, busy and paying attention.

Aim to add a few photos and a short post every week or two. A quick shot of a finished job with a sentence about what it was is plenty.

08How long does it take?

Fixing your profile and getting your details straight can help within a few weeks. Climbing into the top three for competitive searches in a big city usually takes a few months of steady work. In smaller towns or niche trades, it can happen a lot faster.

The tradies who win at local SEO aren't doing anything fancy. They just keep doing the basics consistently while their competitors forget about it. If you'd like help with yours, take a look at our local SEO service or get in touch.
